The chairman of the Western Cape legislature's standing committee on public accounts, Grant Haskin, claims he has been threatened by one of DA leader Helen Zille's MECs for daring to probe possible maladministration in a land deal by City of Cape Town officials.

Haskin said he received an e-mail from transport and public works MEC Robin Carlisle insisting "that the item [on the land deal] should not be on the agenda" of yesterday's committee meeting.

In the SMS to Haskin, Carlisle says: "Grant. I can't believe that [the committee] is entertaining this matter. Did it come to Scopa via you? I truly hope not. R."

At the heart of the matter is the sale of land by Naspers to the City of Cape Town for the expansion of the international convention centre. Though the public protector found no fault in the R106-million transaction, Naspers's Steve Lukey allegedly said the condition of sale was still onerous to ratepayers.

Cape Town deputy mayor Ian Neilson denied the claims of any irregularity and said the city had complied with the public protector's recommendations.
